Hanging a Non-Woven Wall Mural: Paste the Wall, Not the Panels

by Lipastick 30 Oct 2026

With non-woven wall murals you put the paste on the wall and hang the dry panels. That is cleaner and easier than traditional wallpaper, and most people can do it themselves in a day. Your mural arrives in numbered panels about 48 cm (19 in) wide. Read all steps before you start, and follow them in order.

What you need

  • Tape measure, pencil and a spirit level
  • A heavy duty clear wallpaper paste for non-woven wallcoverings, or a premixed vinyl adhesive
  • A paint roller or brush to spread the paste
  • A wallpaper spatula, a stiff seam roller and a sharp knife with fresh blades
  • A damp sponge and clean water
  • A stable ladder, and a second person for tall walls

1. Prepare the wall

Remove old wallpaper and paint flakes, repair the wall with a suitable filler and apply a primer. Let it dry fully. Walls with woodchip wallpaper need extra care, see murals over Raufaser. Unscrew sockets and switch covers, and switch off the power if you work near them.

2. Lay out the panels

Lay the panels on a flat surface in the order of the numbers and check that the pattern matches at every edge before you paste anything. If anything looks wrong, stop and write to us with a photo: a panel with a printing problem is reprinted free within 30 days.

3. Draw a vertical line

Use a spirit level to draw a straight vertical line where the first panel starts. Do not trust the corner of the room, because corners are rarely straight.

4. Apply the paste

Spread a layer about 1.2 mm thick on the wall, about 2.5 cm wider than the panel, and hang the panel straight away, before the paste starts to dry. Work in strips, one panel at a time.

5. Hang and smooth the first panel

Attach the first panel along the line and smooth it with a wallpaper spatula without pressing too hard. Work from the middle to the edges and push out air. At the ceiling and floor, leave a little extra and trim it with the knife later. Remember that the panel absorbs paste and becomes more elastic, so handle it gently.

6. Continue edge to edge

Hang the other panels edge to edge, never overlapping, and match the pattern at every joint. Press the seams with a stiff roller, working lightly.

7. Clean as you go

If paste gets on the front of the mural, remove it right away with a damp sponge, avoiding hard rubbing. Never use a cloth, which can pull fibres. Wipe the edges at the ceiling and skirting board too.

8. Trim and finish

When the paste has set a little, trim the excess with a sharp knife against a straight edge. Change the blade often, because a dull blade tears the print. Refit the socket covers, open the windows a little and avoid strong drafts while the wall dries.

Common mistakes

  • Starting without checking the pattern on the floor.
  • Paste layer too thin, so the panel does not hold at the edges.
  • Pressing too hard with the spatula, which can stretch or mark the surface.

Full instructions are in our non-woven installation guide. Not sure about the material? Read non-woven or paper wallpaper, and measure first with our measuring guide. If you rent and want an easier path, peel and stick needs no paste at all.
