Kitchen wall murals

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, and a mural is an easy way to give it character. A wall with herbs and lemons, retro tiles, warm terracotta brick or fresh greenery makes cooking and family breakfasts more enjoyable, and it costs far less than retiling.

Ideas for kitchen walls

• Botanical and herbs: lemons, olives, herbs and kitchen gardens.
• Tile and pattern: retro tiles, terracotta vases and Mediterranean patterns.
• Brick and texture: red, terracotta and whitewashed brick; see textured murals.
• Fresh greenery: leaves and tropical designs for a bright, airy kitchen.
• Calm neutrals: marble and limewash for modern kitchens.

Where to put the mural

The best spot is a wall away from the stove and sink, such as the wall by the dining table, a breakfast nook or an open wall in a kitchen-diner. A mural there zones the eating area and makes an open-plan space feel cozy. Keep it away from direct heat and water splashes; the area behind the hob and sink is better protected with glass or tiles.
